MIAMI -- The great ones thrive in this situation. Everything has gone against you for the longest time. The whole world is watching. Your opponents have admitted often that they are scared to death of your skills. You're trailing by a touchdown within the final six minutes of the Super Bowl, and you're driving, driving, driving.
You're Peyton Manning, seeking to prove without a doubt that you're more than just a bunch of pretty numbers on your NFL resume.
Oh, well.
He'll never live this down.
While this otherwise extraordinary quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts will reach the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday, he just moved closer to the city limits of the Chokers Hall of Fame.

Lane Kiffin is the Paris Hilton of college football. He's famous for nothing, essentially, except being famous. While at Tennessee, fresh off a firing from the Oakland Raiders, Kiffin claimed all the negative media publicity that surrounded his 13-month tenure in Knoxville was a deft manipulation of the media. Right. In reality, Kiffin was out of his league when it came to understanding how a major SEC team was covered. Kiffin claimed that the spate of attention, 95 percent of which was negative, was needed to revive a program he characterized as moribund.

A moribund program that was, you know, less than a year removed from playing in the SEC championship game when Kiffin was hired. But, no matter, college football's Paris Hilton had to make a scene. And he did, turning the Tennessee job into an extended version of the The Simple Life. When he bolted for USC, Kiffin claimed he no longer needed to capture media attention because the status of the program was so much better. Then, barely one month into the job, Lane Kiffin went all Paris Hilton on us once more: He offered and accepted the commitment of a 13-year-old quarterback David Sills.

Miami, FL, United States (AHN) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that player salaries will increase despite owners seeking rollbacks from athletes. The funds would be used for infrastructure and to increase revenue streaming.

Goodell said during Sunday's CBS Face the Nation that players needed to give back for the good of the game as it continues to grow.

This means new stadiums and international projects needed to be funded, as the league and ownership try to build more revenue.

"You have to invest in these stadiums that we're in today," Goodell said, who became commissioner in 2006. "You need to find new ways of creating revenue, whether it's international or otherwise. And that takes investment. And we need to make sure that the owners have the capital to be able to do that. And then the pie grows, and everyone benefits."

An unexpected name crossed my mind Sunday night as the confetti rained down on Saints' quarterback Drew Brees.

Colt McCoy.

As the Super Bowl MVP soaked up the glory and vindication that comes with the success so many said he couldn't attain, he told Jim Nantz and the rest of the world through watery eyes, "I've tried to imagine what this moment would be like for a long time, but it's even better than I expected."

Contrast that elation with January's college football championship, and the thoughts running through a fellow signal-caller on the dejected end of that emotional spectrum.
"I did too," Colts tackle Ryan Diem said Sunday night.
The Saints' 31-17 victory proved quite a few people wrong, most notably Dungy, who should have known better than to suggest Peyton Manning would breeze through the Saints' defense on his way to a second Super Bowl title.
When Tommy Tuberville took the head coaching job at Texas Tech, he knew this was not a construction project. Texas Tech found success under former coach Mike Leach and was beginning to make a legitimate name for itself.

Red Raiders fans were satisfied with where they were at and enjoyed watching "Air Leach" under their unconventional, somewhat controversial and soon-to-be former head coach, who was one game away from playing for a Big 12 title and a possible shot at the National Championship game in 2008.
The kick changed momentum, kept Manning sidelined.

MIAMI – New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said he planned all along to call an onside kick in the Super Bowl.

He just wanted to find the perfect moment.

Mission accomplished.

Everyone in Sun Life Stadium – and certainly everyone on the Indianapolis Colts’ sideline – expected the Colts to stage a scoring drive when they got the ball on the kickoff to open the second half of the Saints’ 31-17 win over the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday night.

At the time, the Colts led 10-6. A touchdown drive would push the lead back to 11 points and put the burden and pressure squarely on the Saints.
The school announced which wins would be vacated in a memo to the NCAA. Along with the football wins, dozens more victories across 10 men's and women's sports will be vacated.
The football wins came under former coach Bobby Bowden. He has amassed the second-most wins in college football history

MIAMI–Drew Brees has reached the pinnacle of his profession. He has won a Super Bowl. He outplayed Peyton Manning when it mattered most in SB 44.

Brees came to New Orleans to help heal a city and to help elevate a long-suffering franchise. With his brilliant performance in Super Bowl 44, that mission has been completed.
"It's unbelievable," Brees said after the Saints' 31-17 victory. "Just to think of the road that we've all traveled to get this–how much adversity we faced along the way. What can I say?"
Brees' play (32-for39, 288 yards, two touchdowns) spoke volumes, as he showed the world why he set an NFL record this season for passing accuracy (70.6 percent). Following the Saints' game plan to perfection, Brees tortured the Colts with accurate short passes that the Colts simply could not stop.
Tiger Woods may have set a date for his comeback to competitive golf. He aims to play in the Tavistock Cup at Isleworth, Fla., March 22-23, TMZ.com reported Sunday.
The report, which cited "someone who works for the Woods family," came two days after Woods checked himself out of a sex rehab clinic in Hattiesburg, Miss. Woods, the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world, has not played in a tournament since his Thanksgiving weekend car wreck and subsequent allegation of affairs with at least a dozen different women.
Woods reportedly will use the Tavistock event as his lone tune-up before The Masters on April 8-11, according to TMZ.com. The non-PGA tournament typically draws top players because of its $3.5 million purse, and the tournament will be held near his Windermere, Fla., home.
Some news and notes as we patiently (or maybe it should be impatiently) wait for Sept. 2, the first day of the 2010 college football season

The NFL Scouting Combine is Feb. 24-March 2, and 329 players received invitations last week. LSU had the most players invited, with 12. USC was second with 11, while Alabama and Florida each had 10. Every Big Six program except Iowa State, Texas A&M and Washington State had a player invited. (The complete list, courtesy of nflcombine.net, can be found here) Among the notables who were not extended invitations were Clemson G/C Thomas Austin, Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes, UCLA LB Reggie Carter, East Carolina FS Van Eskridge, Boston College WR Rich Gunnell, USC SS Will Harris, Penn State OT Dennis Landolt, Stanford OT Chris Marinelli, Tennessee LB Rico McCoy, Baylor LB Joe Pawelek, TCU CB Rafael Priest, Virginia Tech G Sergio Render, Texas Tech DE Brandon Sharpe and Pittsburgh DT Mick Williams. The only one of the 53 underclassmen who declared for the draft who wasn't invited was Arkansas CB Jerell Norton. The largest number of invitations by position went to defensive linemen, with 66; second-most was 58 defensive backs. There were just 29 running backs and 19 quarterbacks.

Two thoughts on recruiting: First, I restore old cars as a hobby. Part of that process is finding the right part that will fit and mesh with all the other parts so the result will work.

That's what's happening with this recruiting class...the right parts with the right fit are being worked into an existing framework. Recruiting at Alabama may never be like it was in the past and is at some other schools; now the emphasis is not on the number of parts recruited, but on the fit and finish of the parts.

The second thought is this: When I went to seminary, our dean told us to "trust the process." There were times when I thought he was crazy, but in the end, it worked.
MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - The gutsiest coach ever to walk the sideline for the New Orleans Saints saved his most daring call for the biggest game in franchise history. Yes, they're made of brass.
And because of that, Sean Payton and the Saints own a prize that's sterling silver -- the Lombardi Trophy, earned by the NFL champion, which New Orleans assuredly and emphatically is after posting a 31-17 victory over Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium.
